Introduction to Shibari
Shibari is a Japanese tradition that for centuries was used to keep lovers close. This practice required intimate contact and was used to help couples bond with one another. Here at our studio, we have combined Shibari with our multiple set options, creating something brand new for you. Shibari has a deep and rich history that predates modern-day Japan. From its roots in traditional Kinbaku to its embrace by the contemporary BDSM scene, there is much to uncover about this art form as well as why it remains an integral part of Japanese culture today.
With the symbols behind knots and positions and the emotional components of rope tying, Shibari continues to captivate through its profound beauty. This blog post takes a closer look at the origins and how it has evolved over time! Here at Kristen McKay Photo, we create something entirely different with by combining the traditional ties of Shibari with our beautiful style of boudoir. Shibari is a unique and beautiful form of art, and we love emphasizing it!

We enjoyed reading about Amanda’s personal experience with boudoir photography and we hope you do, too!
Q: What was your initial reason for booking a boudoir photography session?
A: “Initially I booked it as a surprise for a significant other, but I quickly realized this was truly a gift for me instead. I had worked for a few years prior to lose a drastic amount of weight and with the help of a specialty physician and personal trainer and having had reconstructive surgery as a result of that weight loss. My very first shoot was like the final piece of the puzzle. The images allowed me to see the end result of what I had worked so hard for.”
Q: What was it like seeing your images for the first time?
A: “Tears! All the happy tears, instantly. Seeing all of my images for the first time was almost like watching a slide show of someone else because it didn’t seem possible that this stunning woman in the photographs could actually be me, but it was me!”

Q: Has anything changed for you since your boudoir experience?
A: “It is no exaggeration to say this experience has changed my life for the better. It is difficult to grasp the overwhelming feeling of empowerment these sessions give you until you have done it yourself. Not just in the moment or when you see the final images- but in your life going forward!”
Q: How has boudoir photography impacted your body image as a woman?
A: “I personally struggle with severe body dysmorphia. I still look in the mirror and fight to see the person I am today, versus the obesity I fought to overcome most of my life. Boudoir photography has become a tool for me. On my worst days struggling with the dysmorphia these images give me something tangible and concrete. I can’t argue with them in my mind, the way I can with struggles in a mirror.”
Q: Would you recommend Kristen McKay Photo to other women?
A: “YES! This is something every woman should do for themselves! It is likely that you’ll go into this with the notion that you’ll get some hot photos of yourself or maybe even for someone else, and believe me, your photos will be scorching! But, in reality, you come out of it with so much more than that. Kristen & team are just incredibly remarkable, and they helped me to see me for the amazing, beautiful, and powerful woman that I am!”
