Introduction to Shibari
Shibari is a Japanese tradition that for centuries was used to keep lovers close. This practice required intimate contact and was used to help couples bond with one another. Here at our studio, we have combined Shibari with our multiple set options, creating something brand new for you. Shibari has a deep and rich history that predates modern-day Japan. From its roots in traditional Kinbaku to its embrace by the contemporary BDSM scene, there is much to uncover about this art form as well as why it remains an integral part of Japanese culture today.
With the symbols behind knots and positions and the emotional components of rope tying, Shibari continues to captivate through its profound beauty. This blog post takes a closer look at the origins and how it has evolved over time! A: I booked my session as a way to celebrate turning 50! When I saw Kristen’s work, I knew I had to have HER!

Q: How did you feel when you saw your images for the first time?
A: I could not believe the person in these photos was me! I couldn’t stop staring at myself!

We enjoyed reading about Amanda’s personal experience with boudoir photography and we hope you do, too!
Q: What was your initial reason for booking a boudoir photography session?
A: “Initially I booked it as a surprise for a significant other, but I quickly realized this was truly a gift for me instead. I had worked for a few years prior to lose a drastic amount of weight and with the help of a specialty physician and personal trainer and having had reconstructive surgery as a result of that weight loss. My very first shoot was like the final piece of the puzzle. The images allowed me to see the end result of what I had worked so hard for.”
Q: What was it like seeing your images for the first time?
A: “Tears! All the happy tears, instantly. Seeing all of my images for the first time was almost like watching a slide show of someone else because it didn’t seem possible that this stunning woman in the photographs could actually be me, but it was me!”
“When I met Kristen McKay, I had no idea how drastic of an impact Kristen and her team of extraordinary women would change my life. What I do know with absolute certainty, is that I am eternally grateful for it.”
Q: Has anything changed for you since your boudoir experience?
A: “It is no exaggeration to say this experience has changed my life for the better. It is difficult to grasp the overwhelming feeling of empowerment these sessions give you until you have done it yourself. Not just in the moment or when you see the final images- but in your life going forward!”
Q: How has boudoir photography impacted your body image as a woman?
A: “I personally struggle with severe body dysmorphia. I still look in the mirror and fight to see the person I am today, versus the obesity I fought to overcome most of my life. Boudoir photography has become a tool for me. On my worst days struggling with the dysmorphia these images give me something tangible and concrete. I can’t argue with them in my mind, the way I can with struggles in a mirror.”
Q: Would you recommend Kristen McKay Photo to other women?
A: “YES! This is something every woman should do for themselves! It is likely that you’ll go into this with the notion that you’ll get some hot photos of yourself or maybe even for someone else, and believe me, your photos will be scorching! But, in reality, you come out of it with so much more than that. Kristen & team are just incredibly remarkable, and they helped me to see me for the amazing, beautiful, and powerful woman that I am!”

The week leading up to your session can cause anxiety. There’s a lot to think about when you’re preparing for a boudoir session, but it should be an exciting and empowering experience. Here are some important tips that will help ensure the process goes smoothly!
Preparing for Your Session
The days prior to your session it will be important to focus on self-care and pampering. Staying hydrated is beneficial for your body as well as your skin, so drink as much water as possible! If you’re considering a boudoir session, but feeling unsure of what to expect, then this post is for you! Here, we’ll be going over everything you need to know in order to prepare yourself for your session. By taking the time to get ready and feel confident in your own skin, you’ll be able to enjoy your session that much more! Knowing what to do prior, or even what to bring along can help lessen any anxiety or stress you may be feeling. So, read on for our top tips on how to prepare yourself for a boudoir photo shoot!
Stretching Before & After
Stretching is a very important part of preparing for your session. You will want to do some light stretching before and after your session. Kristen is a professional poser, and there is one phrase, we always hear the next day after a session “I’M SO SORE!” Follow this easy and fast stretch routine before and after your session, and you can thank us later!
Scheduling Appointments
Give yourself ample time! Schedule any waxing or hair appointments at least a week in advance which will leave a flexible amount of time for skin irritations, or even mishaps! Boudoir photography is intended to be fun and it’s the perfect way to celebrate your beautiful body, just the way it is! Following these few simple tips, will help ensure that your boudoir experience is everything you’ve ever dreamed of—and more.
Skincare
Skincare is essential. If you’re considering a Boudoir Session, here are some tips to help you look your best for your shoot! Exfoliate your skin at least twice a week in the upcoming weeks before your session. Exfoliating helps to remove any dead skin cells, exposing your fresh, healthy skin beneath! Don’t forget to apply your favorite moisturizer! Lastly, if you haven’t booked a session yet, book today and get ready to celebrate YOU!

Do you share my images?
Now, some people might be wondering: do you share my boudoir images publicly? And the answer is no, I do not! Your boudoir images are for your eyes only – unless you choose to share them. I will always respect your wishes if you prefer to keep them private. Ultimately, it is your decision whether or not to share your boudoir images, and I will always respect your privacy. However so many of our clients love their images so much they sign our model release to let us use their images across all of our platforms.
Do I have to wear lingerie?
You don’t have to wear lingerie! We have so many things to choose from at our studio! We have tank tops, sweaters, cotton underwear, and loose shirts, we absolutely LOVEEEE our classic in-the-sheets bonus set. It is such a beautiful clean classic look. You can do whatever you like, in fact at our studio we do so many different things and Kristen has a flair for fashion photography. So whatever idea you may have she is open to anything.
Do you have payment plans?
We do Presession Prepayment plans, Signing up for a Presession Prepayment plan makes things so much easier! There is NO stress when your shoot date comes up! You are able to enjoy your experience to the fullest! We do require you to have your shoot paid 30 days before your session, and we do book out 6 months in advance. You can push your date out as far as you need to.. There is some flexibility in dates if you need a sooner date so definitely ask!
How many outfits should I bring?
Our sessions come with two outfit changes. We also offer many bonus options that may require an additional outfit. You can also add additional outfits for an extra charge.
Is Hair & Makeup included?
Absolutely hair and make-up is included, Samantha does all of our hair and make-up for us, she is wonderful and will pamper you with whatever you like! Whether you want full glam or something a little less! Having the full-on experience is what we are all about! You can bring any ideas you want for your makeup, and we can try to use if for inspiration!
Do you Edit my images?
All of my images are 100% edited and retouched. I provide a magazine-style edit for my clients. All blemishes, stretch marks, color toning, even bodywork, as far as fixing clothing, uplifting, fixing posture, I take care of anything like that if needed.
However, your images straight out of the camera are absolutely beautiful. We show you picture after picture throughout the whole session, to show you that you DO NOT need the editing that you think you do and that you are an amazingly beautiful woman! That lighting, posing, and your amazing photographer is all you need.
Do you help with Posing?
Ladies, you in no way need to know the first thing about posing. That’s MY job. And something I personally excel at. All of our bodies are shaped differently. Flattering your body in the most beautiful way is what I do. I have photographed over 450 women of all shapes and sizes!
What type of Print Products do you offer?
I offer customized luxury Albums with image covers, satin image covers, ice covers, and matching. luxurious boxes countless cover material options, personalized image USBs, metal prints, mounted prints, folio boxes framed wall art sets.
Where is your studio located?
It is not necessary to arrive to your shoot early! Some of our clients are early birds, But we do have appointments booked back to back.
I'm freaking out!! How do I calm my nerves?
Nerves ARE normal GIRL! Every single client is nervous! But guess what? I promise you it goes away! In fact it goes away once you sit in Sam’s chair! She is going got make you feel so at home that you won’t feel so nervous. We are super laid back at our studio! And when we get started shooting? When I show you that 1st picture? Every single time, you ladies fall in love immediately and those nerves just fly out the door. Poof gone! Within minutes you are saying I can’t even believe I was so nervous lol!!

I had always dreamed of having beautiful sexy photos taken but I was a mom of three who had a c section every time! On top of that I had my first son when I was 17 years old, I had gone for 125lbs to 202 lbs. in 9 short months. My body was a mess! How could I have sexy photos when I felt as far from sexy as can be?!
Don’t get me wrong my husband tells me often how beautiful and sexy I am I just couldn’t see what he saw! I started following Kristen’s photography page about 6 years ago and was in aww at all the beautiful women she was photographing! These sexy and sometime bold images grabbed my attention!!! THAT’S HOW I WANT TO LOOK! I want to feel as beautiful as they all look!!
I continued following Kristen and trying to manifest the session I felt I so desperately needed for myself. About 4 and a half years later I was in a position that I could finally do this!!! My husband is forever reminding me to step outside my box and on this day, I was so grateful I did just that! My husband and I booked a couple’s session which was nothing short of amazing, fun and so much hard work. The package I had got allowed me to also have individual photos taken and let me tell you what, that was one of the first times in my entire life (mind you I was 43 yrs. old) I felt as beautiful as my husband always tells me I am!!!
06 07 The morning when we had arrived, we were both super nervous! I was more an excited nervous because well I was going to be able to look as beautiful and sexy as all the ladies before me in Kristen’s studio. We walked in and was greeted by Kristen with the most amazing personality!! Helping us to feel as we have known her our whole life. It was refreshing! Then I got to meet the Beautiful and talented Samantha who would be doing my hair and makeup. For those who know me know that I am not a girly girl. I have never been one to know how to do my makeup like many beautiful women do! I always wanted to learn but never had anyone with patients to teach me! As Samantha was applying my makeup, I was trying hard to pay attention but was more fascinated with just how beautiful I felt and looked! She finished up with applying a beautiful lip then I was on my way into the studio.
Kristen had picked out some gorgeous pieces for the session out her client closet! Which is more in fact like a client room filled with so many beautiful options of lingerie, robes, body suits, shoes, jewelry, the list goes on!! She literally has available anything and everything you can imagine in all sizes and colors! I couldn’t wait to get them on and feel that sense of sexiness that was burning to get out!
Stare Away
We had previously discussed through a phone call what type of photos and style I wanted so we got started right away!! We started with our couple’s session on her famous blue suede couch (which is in retirement now) It started off sweet and elegant and got steamy quick! Not steamy in the way most would think. Steamy as in muscles burning, working up a sweat holding poses, laughing with Kristen her assistant and my husband as Kristen’s hollering hold it, hold it now close your eyes and part those lips and breath. She would show us the images off the back of the camera and let me just say DAMN we were HOT!! I could not wait to see what these images looked like when Kristen was done applying her magic to them!!
After we had completed the couple’s session, I changed into an outfit she had picked out for me for my solo shoot. It was a pink almost skin tone an outline in black lace and was beautiful. I felt incredible. My husband had stepped out while she did my shoot so he could be surprised at our reveal, and I am glad he did because on reveal day the look on his face I am sure mine to, but his face was priceless!!!! He smiled the biggest smile I had ever seen!! I cried not in front of Kristen but when we got in the car!! I asked is that how you see me every day? His response was yes!! I could not believe that I was the person I looked at in the images. I was stunning, I was sexy, I was beautiful, I was ON TOP OF THE WORLD!! I was empowered I had never felt so alive, so strong, so ready to take on anything!!
A short time after our reveal we received the most beautiful metal print and leather-bound book of all the photos we had picked out!! I sat with it in my lap for over an hour looking through it repeatedly!!! I still do this at least once a week!
Since that first session that literally has changed my life, I have had the pleasure of working with Kristen and her team 4 more times and will continue to work with her as often as I can because she is amazing from start to finish!! A true queen in her profession!! <3
